Glenroe Cottage Renovation & New Build Extension

Client Brief
Returning to Ireland after several years abroad, our clients approached us with a vision to sensitively renovate their two-generation family farmhouse and create a contemporary extension that would support modern family life. With a young family in tow, they sought a design that respected the cottage’s heritage while introducing bright, comfortable, and well connected living spaces.

Location
This project is set in the picturesque village of Glenroe, County Limerick, at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac laneway on a now decommissioned farm. Surrounded by lush pastureland and expansive rural views, the site offers uninterrupted vistas of the Galtee Mountains, making it an ideal setting for a peaceful, countryside home in the townsland of Glenroe Co Limerick.

Design Approach
Our architectural response was to preserve the character of the existing Irish cottage farmhouse while introducing new living spaces in a contemporary courtyard arrangement. Inspired by traditional Irish farmyard clusters, the layout organises the extension around a central courtyard, a protected and versatile outdoor space accessible from all areas of the home.

The new wing includes an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area that connects seamlessly with the original structure, while a private bedroom wing ensures quiet zones for rest and retreat.

Externally, the barn inspired forms are clad in natural timber with a metal roof finish, echoing the agricultural heritage of the site. Expansive glazing captures panoramic mountain views and floods the interiors with light. The sheltered courtyard blurs the line between indoor and outdoor living, offering year-round enjoyment of the rural setting.
