Client Brief
Our clients, a young family who have recently relocated from Dublin to the Kilkenny countryside, approached Moha Architects to reimagine their existing 2007 built bungalow into a contemporary home tailored to their lifestyle. With both parents working remotely, the design needed to reflect a balance between family life, productivity, and a connection to the surrounding landscape.

The brief called for a significant transformation of the existing structure to provide open plan living spaces, generous natural light, and dedicated zones for remote work, all while improving the home’s energy efficiency and environmental performance.

Site Context
The site is located in the townsland of Troyswood, approximately 5km north of Kilkenny City. The existing bungalow occupies a prominent flat hillside position with sloping topography to the the site offers sweeping panoramic views over the surrounding Kilkenny countryside.

Design Approach
Positioned on an elevated hillside with sweeping views over the Kilkenny countryside, the new design is grounded in its rural setting. The architectural language draws inspiration from traditional farmstead forms, reinterpreted with a contemporary edge. The steep roof pitch, dark metal cladding, and timber-lined facades allow the house to nestle into the landscape while embracing a modern identity. The new proposal seeks to open up original dwelling towards the panoramic views. Large areas of glazing and sliding doors create seamless indoor-outdoor flow, while a deep roof overhang and pergola structure provide sheltered external spaces for year-round use. The layout creates visual and physical links between interior living spaces and the landscape, enhancing the family’s connection to nature.
